Artificial intelligence for healthier coastal waters
ARION-MED advances coastal water-quality research in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean by combining environmental observations with artificial intelligence.
The project brings together field measurements, satellite products, ocean model data, and land-use indicators to better understand and predict eutrophication and microbial contamination.
Through a unified hybrid environmental database, predictive models, and management scenarios, ARION-MED aims to strengthen the scientific basis for early warning and evidence-based marine environmental protection.

The challenge
How can we bring together observations collected by different organizations, at different locations and times, to build a clearer picture of coastal water quality?
How do nutrients, seasonal conditions, water circulation and human activities interact to influence algal growth and coastal water-quality deterioration?
Can environmental observations and AI help anticipate changes in fecal indicator bacteria and complement laboratory-based monitoring?
How can model interpretation and scenario analysis help identify vulnerable areas and inform monitoring, mitigation and restoration priorities?
The Cyprus University of Technology and Cyprus SubSea combine expertise in environmental data analysis, AI modeling, coastal monitoring and microbiological analysis. Collaboration with DFMR and regional scientific institutions connects the research with long-term observations and Eastern Mediterranean environmental knowledge.
